Like I could love BOOM! Box, the imprint that gave us Lumberjanes – the summer camp experience I really wanted as a kid – and SLAM!, the roller derby title I wanted and deserved, any more. This November, we’re getting a fencing title. Yes, you read that right. Competitive fencing. You don’t think fencing is awesome? May I re-introduce you to Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first Muslim to represent the U.S. in Olympic fencing?
Fencing is exhilarating, and makes you feel like a pirate. And who doesn’t want to feel like a pirate? But I digress. This November, BOOM! Box puts it all on the fencing strip with their book, Fence; bringing “the worlds of teen soap opera with the adrenaline rush of competitive fencing, an exciting journey of self-discovery that challenges readers with one simple phrase: En garde!”
Created by author C.S. Pacat and fanart goddess extraordinaire Johanna the Mad, Fence introduces us to Nicholas, a 16 year-old outsider who joins the fencing team at an elite boys school. We’re getting rivalry, competition, angsty storylines, and – promises Pacat – “a diverse cast and a story that is exuberantly queer.”
Have you put this on your pull list yet? No? Then allow me to present some of the art.
