Games of Thrones brought controversy, Letterman said good-bye and Supergirl said hello. Lots to talk about in this week’s Geek Rewind, all the things you may have missed by living in the real world rather than the virtual one.
Game of thrones rape controversy.
The sixth episode of Game of Thrones deeply offended a large group of viewers.
The rape of Sansa, after she seemed to have overcome so much, felt like a betrayal to many or at the very least lazy writing. The use of rape as a plot device has one popular site refusing to cover the show any longer.
On a weekend that also aired the start of one of the most difficult moments in the Outlander books, also involving rape and sexual abuse, some used the oppotunity to explore how the shows differed in the handling of their subjects.
Simon Pegg inserts foot in mouth.
Simon Pegg made a remark in an interview with Radio Times magazine where he said that science fiction was being used to infantilize us so we wouldn’t pay attention to things going on in the real world:
Obviously I’m very much a self-confessed fan of science fiction and genre cinema but part of me looks at society as it is now and just thinks we’ve been infantilised by our own taste. Now we’re essentially all consuming very childish things – comic books, superheroes. Adults are watching this stuff, and taking it seriously.
This led to a lot of back lash to which he responded with a longer, more thought out blog post on the subject.
Letterman leaves the stage.
David Letterman ended his 33 year run Wednesday night. It was a personal moment for Julie, here at On Wednesdays but the world felt the loss as well.
When mourning a loss it’s best to remember the good times.
The All Female Superhero Comic A-Force Debuts.
As part of the Secret Wars crossover, the comic A-Force debuted this week. Featuring characters as varied as, She-Hulk, Medusa, Dazzler and Ms. America, the book is an anomoly simply for the all female ensemble cast. It is thankfully not a gimmick in that it is written and plotted beautifully by Maguerite Bennett and W. Willow Wilson. Here’s hoping it lasts long past Secret Wars is over.
Supergirl pilot leaks!
Six months early, the Supergirl pilot appeared on screens everywhere. Not television screens, computer screens. The pilot leaked late this week in a move many find suspicious. Speculation is, that CBS or WB leaked it themselves to build buzz for the upcoming show. Having seen it my feelings are mixed. It may be too cutesie for it’s own good.
